The short-listed candidates were Ahamed Barry, Sandun De Silva, and Kasuni Rathnasuriya.

For the final interview, the short-listed candidates were given an opportunity to make a short presentation expanding on their written application and addressing questions related to market awareness, vision and ambition and their desire to develop mutually beneficial engagement with the UK.

The final judging panel for the YFE Award 2011 comprised of Kumar Mirchandani, Managing Director Favourite Group and garment industry representative; Rwituja Mookherjee, Head Creative Economy British Council India & Sri Lanka; and Tony Reilly, Country Director British Council Sri Lanka.

Kumar Mirchandani comments on the judging process, “The bar was definitely higher this year; we had 3 great finalists, any one of which would have been a worthy winner. But eventually it was about combining both creativity AND entrepreneurship – and that's why Kasuni was our choice.”

Kasuni Rathnasuriya, who was announced as the winner after the Industrial Fashion Show at the SLDF, is the founder and sole proprietor of the label вЂKUR’. A contemporary women’s label, which she launched in 2009, вЂKUR’ concerns the sustainable approaches in the fashion business such as revitalising the dying crafts in Sri Lanka, and recycling approaches.

A Member and a passed finalist of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, UK, Kasuni is currently employed as a Market Analyst at Brandix Lanka, the single largest apparel exporter in Sri Lanka with globally renowned eco-friendly best practices. She graduated from the Academy of Design in 2007 and is currently reading for her MBA at the Postgraduate Institute of Management, University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

“In 2007, when British council launched the YFE award, I was there. At that time it was just a dream. But last Saturday, my dream came true. This is one of the best things that has ever happened to me in my life and my fashion career so far. I am so happy to be recognized for my entrepreneurship skills and to get the chance to represent my country in the final program. Many thanks to the British Council for launching this award in Sri Lanka.”, says Kasuni.

Tara Grinna predicts swimwear trends for 2011

Tara Grinna predicts swimwear trends for 2011

For those overwhelmed with choices on what to wear for summer 2011, swimwear designer Tara Grinna provides a glimpse of what could be the trends for Spring/Summer 2011.

“The Fashion Swim Week in Miami indicates a very colorful 2011. There’s going to be plenty of choices to play with colors. Colors like blue green, orange and shades of brown are likely to be the most popular. Turquoise and light skies blended with greens are predicted to be a great hit for 2011. Gold is another color that’s likely to rule the 2011 swimwear scene, with golden threads, golden dye et al …set to add bling to 2011, says the legendary designer.

“Besides colors geometric shapes characterized by tribal, ethnic and abstract art, unexpected colorful animal prints and beautiful abstract composites are also likely to rule the roost for 2011. Just as the last few years bandeaus and monokinis are to be a feature of 2011 as well. You could add bikinis and one piece suits to this list, she adds.

“Vintage swimwear that exudes sexiness and style and reveals just the right amount of skin is likely to make a comeback. A perfect balance is maintained between mystery and sexiness in these swimsuits. For those deciding to go bold, styles are likely to go diverse and likely to range from deep Brazilian cuts to moderate cuts, and full covered bottoms.

This year at Tara Grinna, we’ve incorporated the latest style of colors in an unexpected way and when the collection is merchandised, the color stories are eye popping variations of luscious hues that hang beautifully together so one can mix and match solids and prints or choose both.

Tara Grinna is in the swimwear industry for over 25 years now and is a respected personality known for her ability to fit and compliment almost every figure type with her body flattering silhouettes.

“Because I always have such an emotional connection to each printed fabric or dyed solid color I have chosen to use in each season’s collection, I felt as if it should be expressed and perhaps the consumer will agree that the fabric, when placed in her hands in the form a finely crafted swimsuit that has been created with a great deal of care and personal interest and will create an emotion inside her as well,” she adds.

UK:Watch Hut adds Emporio Armani Ceramica collection

Watch Hut adds Emporio Armani Ceramica collection

Watch Hut adds Emporio Armani Ceramica collection

Emporio Armani watches are to present fashion fans with an alternative this Christmas, following the launch of a new collection at the UK's largest watch website.

Emporio Armani Ceramica is a recent addition at the Watch Hut, showcasing the popular fashion brand's ceramic watch models for both men and women.

Given Emporio Armani's worldwide reputation as a manufacturer of highly fashionable clothing and accessories, coupled with the current industry trend for ceramic watches, the Watch Hut expects the Ceramica range to be a huge hit over the festive period.

Emporio Armani Ceramica was introduced to the Watch Hut in spring 2010, when two rectangular-cased ladies models - AR1407 (black) and AR1409 (white) - were featured. Since then, the collection has expanded to such an extent that, as Christmas steadily approaches, a variety of options are now available as potential gifts.

Each Emporio Armani Ceramica watch features a black or white bracelet with matching colour dial. The cases and dials of the gents' models are significantly larger than those of the ladies', while chronograph editions are available for those serious about fashion AND good timekeeping.

Of course, the quality of the ceramic material itself offers its own benefits. Ceramic is more lightweight than stainless steel and its highly durable nature means it resists scratches.

Such advantages only accentuate the sheer style factor possessed by the watches of the Emporio Armani Ceramica collection, all available at less than GBP500.

As an authorised dealer of Emporio Armani watches, the Watch Hut guarantees that all Emporio Armani products purchased from the website are genuine. The website's returns policy has been extended so that any items purchased before Christmas are valid for return until 31 January 2010.

Garfield wins prize for English breakfast-inspired knitwear

Winter-warmers inspired by eggs and bacon won a De Montfort University (DMU) graduate first prize at a top fashion industry event.

Leicester’s DMU swept the board at the annual ASBCI’s Student Conference which saw two of its fashion graduates triumph in awards sponsored by some of the UK’s top high street retailers.

English breakfast-inspired knitwear by Fashion Design graduate, Garfield Kar Chun Li; and a topical dissertation on chemicals used in the textile industry by Fashion Technology graduate, Laura Wilson, scooped the top prizes in two awards at the conference.

Garfield, 24, from Hong Kong, was one of 13 finalists who beat off competition from over 100 design students nationwide to win a coveted place in the ASBCI Student Design Award sponsored by New Look.

New Look’s Head of Trends, Anna Andrews, presented the £1500 prize to Garfield at the catwalk finals held at the ASBCI Student Conference at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) on Wednesday 10 November.

Garfield, who graduated the BA (Hons) Fashion Design course at DMU in July, said: “The competition brief required something that captures the вЂBest of British’ and I decided to use English food as my inspiration for my collection.”

His collection entitled вЂEnglish Breakfast’ consists of five garments: a bright yellow knitted jumper adorned with a pattern of mushrooms, tomatoes and kitchen cutlery; a matching yellow chullo-style hat and knitted socks; a printed vest top which is decorated with different breakfast foods in the form of a smiley face; and boxer shorts with a check print pattern of salt and pepper shakers.

Garfield added: “The knitted jumper contains about 15 types of different yarns to create different colour effect and texture. The base colour is yellow and I used a punch card to create the different coloured pattern across the jumper.”

Commenting on Garfield’s collection, New Look’s womenswear and menswear judges said: “A highly original knitted long sleeved sweater with shorts, printed T, hat and socks. A very original 'Full English Breakfast' approach to the best of British showing a great sense of fun and individuality.

“Totally committed to the design brief - excellent workmanship with each element of the outfit extremely well made and the prints well executed. This student has huge potential for the future.”

Research into chemicals used in fashion won BSc Fashion Technology graduate Laura Wilson the prestigious ASBCI Student Dissertation Award 2010 sponsored by Marks & Spencer.

Laura, 23, who also graduated this summer, was awarded the first prize of ВЈ500 at the conference for her dissertation entitled REACH and the textiles industry, which examines how EU legislation relating to the use of chemicals in manufacturing affects the fashion industry.

Her project was picked from the best dissertations selected from seven of the top fashion universities in the UK.

Laura, from Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, said: “I’m pretty surprised about winning the award as I didn’t expect to, but I’m really very proud and glad all the hard work has paid off for both myself and my tutors.”
