India:Fake Pashmina shawls hit traditional artisans

India:Fake Pashmina shawls hit traditional artisans

With the global economic crisis, taking its toll on each and every export sector, the vulnerable handicrafts industry has not been left behind in being deeply affected. Most of the artisans hail from rural and poor backgrounds which makes it more difficult for them to survive through this Tsunami like crisis.

The famous Pashmina shawl is also facing problems, which are not of its own making nor related to the economic crisis. Fake Pashmina shawls are circulating in the state of Jammu and Kashmir to the consternation of the traditional Pashmina shawl producers. The customer is also not able to discern between a genuine and a fake.

Since these fake Pashmina shawls are sold at cheap rates, people flock to buy them, unaware that they are being sold a counterfeit shawl. Sales to the extent of nearly 50 percent have been affected since these bogus shawls started to find their way in to the Kashmiri markets.

The Pashmina shawl producers are expecting the government to intervene in the matter, before it is too late and most of the traditional weavers move out of the business. The government on its part had introduced a law, making it mandatory for handicraft products to carry a logo to differentiate it from the fake ones, but it was never implemented properly.

Pakistan:Textile sector losing sheen in int’l market

Pakistan:Textile sector losing sheen in int’l market

Textile sector that accounts for around 46 percent of entire manufacturing sector, generating 60 percent of total foreign exchange for the country is currently facing critical challenges.

Fluctuating cotton prices in the international market, and rising interest rates have crippled the exports of this industry. Further energy crisis has added to the woes of the manufacturers.

The industry engages more than 40 percent of labourers who depend solely on this sector for earning their livelihood.

Speaking exclusively to Fibre2fashion.com , Dr Murtaza Mughal, President of Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) told, “The crisis looming on the textile sector, needs immediate and proper Government intervention; otherwise competing in the international export market will be really difficult.”

Informing about PEW , Dr Mughal stated, “We are an independent group of experts and economists that works without any aid or prejudices. We provide recommendations to Government and concerned sectors. There are some issues that need to be addressed on priority. Lack of skilled workforce, professionals, designers and creativity is an issue.

“Although there is a separate Textile Ministry, it is not delivering the way if should be, as other ministries are not cooperating with them. Like Production ministry feels that their powers have been snatched. Even interest rates are one of the highest in the world.”

He further stresses, “Substandard inputs at being used at every step; from sowing to finished products. Even availability of pesticides, insecticides always remained a problem. Modern cottonseed is yet to be introduced in majority of cotton sowing areas. Competition has increased since 2005 when special protection was withdrawal.

“The investment in R&D is also falling. World demand for textiles is currently nearing to 19 Trillion, (set to slide due to economic crunch); while Pakistan’s share is less than 1 percent which will go down further. Most importantly energy outages have crippled this sector. Remaining working units are in business to keep the customers. There is interference and monopolies in the sector impeding growth.”

According to PEW President if Pakistani Government pays heed to the above problems then only the textile industry can survive in the current scenario.

USA:Laughing Out Loud Kids debut collection wins ‘Best in Show’ Award

The premiere collection from new children’s apparel label Laughing Out Loud is already receiving accolades. The Spring/Summer ’09 line from designer Mila Cole, which debuted at New York’s premiere Children’s Club trade show in October, has received the covetable “Best in Show” award honoring market newcomers from longtime industry expert Tina Barry, a correspondent for JamesGirone.com, a revered online guide to the children’s marketplace.

Selected for its child-appropriate fashion, successful incorporation of leading trends, and cohesiveness as a collection, Barry noted that Laughing Out Loud’s “freewheeling sportswear” stands out from other brands due to its modern look, vibrant colors, and high-quality Pima cotton knits and woven fabrics.

In addition, she highlighted the designer’s talent for bringing whimsy to clean-lined silhouettes through bold touches like wide stripes and ribbon embellishments. Barry picked a multi-tiered dress as the must-have design from the brand’s spring collection: “With the ruffled body, the rich charcoal lining and [a] bold crisscrossed woven ribbon, the Flamenco dress lives up to its name,” she said.

“As a new label, we’re thrilled to have been pinpointed as an exceptional newcomer to the children’s wear market,” Cole said. “With children’s retailers looking for new and fresh designs to keep their customers shopping amid a troubled economy, this award provides evidence that ours is a brand to watch.”

Lawyer-turned-designer Mila Cole debuted her children’s wear label in 2008, hoping to share with other parents styles that evoke the love, laughter and liveliness of her own two sons. Made for boys and girls ages 0 to 6, her designs emphasize comfort and quality and are made of high-grade Pima cotton sourced from her native Peru.

USA:New Loteria Jewelry Line captures spirit of popular Mexican Bingo game

San Antonio jewelry designer Carolyn Dublin is offering a new “Loteria” line of jewelry featuring images from the popular Mexican card game. “La Loteria,” is similar to American bingo, but rather than numbers, uses images that all have their own stories and have become ingrained in Latin American culture over generations.

“I taught my three children how to play Loteria, using dried pinto beans to mark each square,” Dublin said, noting that her designs grew out of her own living experience in San Antonio, where Latino culture dominates the city’s population and landscape.

Her first 10 Loteria jewelry designs include “La Rana” (the frog), “La Mano” (the hand), “La Calavera” (the skull), “La Luna” (the moon), “La Rosa” (the rose), “El Diablito” (the little devil), “La Sirena” (the mermaid), “La Bandera” (the flag), “La Arana” (the spider) and “El Gallo” (the rooster).

“When I wear this jewelry, I am struck by the strong emotions it provokes in people – young and old,” Dublin said. “They start telling me the stories of their own Loteria memories, often about how their Moms or Grandmothers taught them to play the game, or how they were given childhood nicknames related to the Loteria images.”

“La Loteria” originated in Italy, moved to Spain and then was brought to Mexico in 1769. The images that represent Loteria today come from designs finalized in 1912 by Don Clemente Jacques. The Mexican company bearing his name – Don Clemente, Inc. of Queretaro, Mexico – has continued this version through the generations, keeping the original artwork for its 54 Loteria cards.

Dublin launched her new jewelry line at Art Basel Miami, one of the top art shows in the United States. Her Loteria pendants are already being worn by such recording artists as Luis Fonsi, who has been #1 on the Latin music charts for 11 weeks, and “Locos Por Juana,” Grammy-nominated for “Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album.”

Carolyn Dublin’s Loteria jewelry (www.LoteriaJewelry.com) is designed and produced by Dublin Design LLC under an exclusive agreement with Don Clemente, Inc. Her jewelry is available in Sloan/Hall Boutiques in San Antonio and Houston and at Melissa Guerra’s shop in San Antonio’s historic Pearl Brewery.

Germany:Global Lingerie Design Competition heads into its second round

Underwear manufacturer Triumph is kicking off 2009 with the second launch of its global lingerie design competition for young fashion and design students. This year, young talents will not only be selected by the prestigious jury in Milan, they will also be chosen by visitors to the http://www.triumph-inspiration-award.com website who will also be able vote on who should receive the award.

Creative young talents from around the globe have been called upon to unleash their inspiration under the guidance of the design motto "Icons." The aim is to interpret an icon they have freely selected on their own and then create a one-of-a-kind design showpiece made up of one bra and one pair of briefs.

Just as in 2008, this year's prizes will include a good deal of money for first place, 15,000 Euros, along with an opportunity to adapt the winning design together with the Triumph design team into a commercial underwear set. This set will be delivered on a hanger date in 2010 to Triumph stores around the world as a limited line. Second and third place winners will go home with 10,000 and 5,000 Euros respectively. All national winners will receive a chance to take part in the International Finals during the Milan Fashion Week.

International Finals in Milan in the presence of an expert jury - The winner of the Triumph Inspiration Award will be announced in September 2009 at the International Finals during the Milan Fashion Week. All competition participants will have pre-qualified themselves for the Finals in Milan at their own national competitions.

Visitors to the http://www.triumph-inspiration-award.com website will also be able to cast their own personal vote on the submitted entries from August 31 to September 13, 2009. The online community will thus be able to decide which designs are their favourites.

The design receiving the most votes online will then enter the Finals in Milan with one set vote in the expert jury. A winner will also be drawn from all those who voted for this favourite and this person will be able to travel to Milan and take a seat with the jury at the International Finals, to personally represent the online community.

Triumph Inspiration Award as a launching pad for a professional career - With the Triumph Inspiration Award initiated in 2008, Triumph wants to offer young design talents a launching pad for a possible professional career in the lingerie industry. The annual student competition stands under a variety of design mottos and honours creative and innovative submissions from the underwear line.

It then enables winners to sell a limited series of their designs at Triumph stores. In 2008, a jury made up of designer duo Viktor and Rolf, famous international model Helena Christensen, celebrated photographer Ellen von Unwerth, Chief Purchasing Officer and Creative Director 'Sarah from colette', top Chinese model Lv Yan and Jan Rosenberg from Triumph decided to give the award to the design "Under Skin" by Midori Matsuo of Japan. The commercial version of this design will be available at selected Triumph stores around the world starting in August.

"Dealing with trends from art, culture, fashion and lifestyle that we depict anew in every collection is part of our daily work. After the impressive results in 2008, we are especially pleased to be able to share our enthusiasm for the lingerie sector with talented young designers this year as well and invite them to discover the exciting world of lingerie for themselves," says Jan Rosenberg, Global Head of Sales and Marketing for Triumph International.

USA:CTR Headwear adds more Eco-Tech with new Dri-release wool

USA:CTR Headwear adds more Eco-Tech with new Dri-release wool

USA:CTR Headwear adds more Eco-Tech with new Dri-release wool

Chaos Thermal Regulation- CTR, the technical work horse in cold weather headwear, adds Dri-release wool fabric to their best technical skus. Chaos’ 40 percent growth in 2008 can be partially attributed to its diverse CTR collection. The 2009 CTR series has a new merchandising program, new product updates and a new fabric - Dri-release wool.

Adding the Dri-release fabric to Chaos Thermal Regulation - CTR will make the program even smarter. The new fabric is integrated strategically into each category, including an all-new, вЂadrenaline’-style, Base-layer-design made entirely with Dri-release wool. The fabric addition offers complete four-way stretch on base layer products. These products offer better wicking of sweat from the body and faster than other fabrics.

Dri-release is a unique fabric that feels like cotton and keeps wearers comfortable, dry and odor-free. Made from a patented yarn with a mix of natural fibers, Dri-release combines the best qualities of wicking and softness. A Freshguard treatment embedded in the yarn virtually eliminates odor.

Unlike other topically finished performance polyesters that lose their ability to wick away moisture with each washing, Dri-release's comfort qualities are permanent. They're built right into the yarn itself so clothing made with Dri-release always feels soft, always stays dry.

In other changes to its product line, Chaos has improved its already top-selling face mask, the вЂmulti-tasker pro’, with a warmer wind barrier, a much improved breathability system and an antimicrobial air flow mesh over the mouth. This design will improve both warmth and inhalation/exhalation for better aerobic results, for example one can stay warm and get all the air they need working hard on the slopes. CTR has updated all its face masks products with windproof face protection, including bandanas, multi-tasker pros, face toasters, and neck/face protectors.

In addition to new product updates, Chaos has restructured its merchandising program. Its packaging is refined and doesn’t interfere with a consumer trying a product on for the best fit, while simple for the staff to get the product back on the rack. The new packaging will wrap the product and allow it to hang succinctly and uniform. The presentation tells an easy to read story to the consumer and working staff. Size indicators, style and fabric names, are color coded by fabrics, and style numbers have all be increased in size for easier handling at store level and making reordering simple and clear. The durable packaging is made from Polypropylene (PP5) that is recyclable and made from a recyclable plastic.

Chaos offers quality, responsiveness and a vast array of headgear possibilities. The Brand is owned by Do-Gree fashions, a Mill locally owned and operated—with three generations of experience. Do-Gree Fashions in Montreal, Canada is able to respond quickly to customer requests, as well as fast-paced market trends, both of which translate to unparalleled service. Designs from CHAOS, CTR and sister brand MOON SHADOW vary from winter-technical to four-season, urban to alpine, casual to high-end alpaca, all of which supply the men’s, women’s and youth markets.

Switzerland:REI USA adds bluesign standard to its Product Sustainability Strategy

bluesign technologies ag announces that Recreational Equipment Inc (REI), an US national cooperative providing quality outdoor gear and clothing, is a new bluesign member, allowing the company to use the independent bluesign standard as part of its product design and sourcing process.

REI considers the bluesign standard as the strongest global solution available to proactively address textile environmental, health and safety strategy. Further, utilizing the standard is an important step in managing the substances used to create products the co-op sells under its branded labels.

With this announcement, the design teams for REI branded apparel and cycling brands will begin to use the bluesign standard to help make more informed textile supply chain choices. For example, designers will utilize the standard in making yarn, fabric and dye decisions and in the selection of mills and production factories. This approach will provide greater supply chain transparency in support of REI’s goal of reducing the environmental impact of its products.

REI has a number of efforts in place to reduce its environmental footprint and increase its product stewardship involvement. For example the co-op is currently working with other outdoor brands and retailers to help drive positive, lasting change within the industry. The co-op was a founding member of the Outdoor Industry Association’s (OIA) Eco-Working Group, an industry organization establishing a common framework to measure, report and ultimately improve on the environmental impact of outdoor gear and clothing.

Today, the group includes more than 100 brands, manufacturers and others working toward a mutually agreeable definition of what “green” means for products and apparel. Bluesign technologies’ methodology covers a significant portion of the material impacts that the OIA Eco-Working Group is considering.

Peter Waeber, CEO of bluesign technologies ag states: „We are proud that REI, the largest outdoor retailer in the USA, expresses its faith in the bluesign system by becoming a bluesign member. With REI on board, we won another influential member which allows us to mobilize more companies of the entire textile manufacturing chain to take EHS issues into account in their daily work. By joining the bluesign standard, REI has a powerful tool at hand to meet and exceed the increasingly demanding and educated needs of its members.”

REI’s in-house team designs and develops award-winning gear and apparel for camping, hiking, cycling, urban lifestyle, travel, and general outdoor recreation. The brands REI and Novara are private labels and sold exclusively through the coop’s retail stores, online at www.rei.com and through its catalogs. REI is a US national outdoor retail co-op dedicated to inspiring, educating and outfitting its members and the community for a lifetime of outdoor adventure and stewardship.

Finland:Reach-IT system once again goes online

The new REACH-IT release went online on 5 January as scheduled. Companies must now submit all their dossiers, including “late pre-registrations”, to ECHA via REACHIT. Currently, the REACH-IT-system is affected by very high levels of use, leading to slow access to the pre-SIEFs and slow dossier submission. ECHA is working on solutions to improve system performance which will be implemented progressively.

Following data migration and upgrading, the new version of REACH-IT came online on 5 January. Companies can now submit their registrations, inquiries, PPORD notifications and classification and labeling notifications online. The “late pre-registration” module is also online. Manuals have been updated to assist companies in the submission of the different dossiers.

Soon after launch, ECHA noted heavy traffic in the pre-SIEFs caused by users logged into the REACH-IT system. Users searching within the pre-SIEFs are downloading information generated by system intensive operations. This activity slows REACH-IT down, affecting not only access to the pre-SIEFs but also dossier submission. As a result some users are experiencing long delays and occasional error messages during dossier upload.

In addition, the system may become unavailable during peak hours. ECHA is working on solutions to improve the system performance. These will include measures to increase capacity and improve the efficiency of the database and internal messaging. These solutions will be implemented progressively and it will take several weeks before the system is performing optimally. Companies are asked to be patient.

Companies are assured that dossiers they submit will be processed by ECHA to the normal deadlines. If you have questions in relation to your submission please send them by using the REACHIT: Enquiry on specific submission to ECHA form. It can be

Germany:Rate of international attendance up again at DOMOTEX 2009

Germany:Rate of international attendance up again at DOMOTEX 2009

Germany:Rate of international attendance up again at DOMOTEX 2009

The new business year got off to a confident and optimistic start at the four-day DOMOTEX HANNOVER tradeshow for carpets and floor coverings: "Despite the tough economic climate, DOMOTEX attracted more exhibitors than the comparable previous event, while at the same time experiencing a further increase in the caliber of attending professionals and providing the industry with new ideas through a range of innovative info forums," commented Stephan KГјhne, the member of the Deutsche Messe Managing Board in charge of DOMOTEX.

Although many exhibitors went into this year's show with cautious expectations, there were numerous reports of brisk business activity. The general mood among exhibitors could be summed up as: "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." At approximately 38,000, attendance was down - as expected - compared with last year's event, which had been staged under significantly more favorable market conditions. There was virtually unanimous agreement among the show's 1,394 exhibitors, however, about the high quality of leads generated in Hannover. "Any crisis also creates a wealth of new opportunities. DOMOTEX 2009 has emitted positive signals in tough times and given the industry valuable guidance for the road ahead," emphasized KГјhne.

According to Hans Joachim Schilgen, President of the German Home Textile Industry Association: "Our members came to DOMOTEX with realistic expectations. Their ultimately positive verdict was based on the many promising talks held and deals signed. New developments got a lot of attention, and interest in sustainability was on the rise. DOMOTEX has clearly lived up to its reputation as the international marketplace for innovations and new leads."

Dr. Ali Ipektchi, Chairman of the European Carpet Importers Association (EUCA), commented: "In good times, trade fairs play an important role. In difficult times, their importance is greater still, since the industry needs a main gathering place at which to compare notes on the challenges ahead. The overall mood at DOMOTEX was positive, despite a measure of uncertainty about the outlook for 2009."

Emphasizing the show's strong international appeal, KГјhne remarked: "With 82 percent of exhibitors and 64 percent of trade visitors coming from abroad, DOMOTEX has underscored its significance as a beacon for the global flooring industry - even in a time of international economic incertitude. Exhibitors and visitors value DOMOTEX as a sharply focused event where pros meet pros and deals are done."

Taiwan:Formosa Petrochemicals augments ethylene capacity

Since a large number of ethylene manufacturing plants have either partially closed down or fully shut down in the last few months, due to the slowdown in demand for the raw material, the demand has started eclipsing supply in the last few days leading to the ethylene petrochemical units restarting their units.

Recently there were reports of the Taiwan based petrochemical major, Formosa Petrochemicals increasing utilization of its ethylene capacity. Fibre2fashion.com spoke to Mr Lin, spokesperson of the company, who said that they had indeed augmented their ethylene capacities compared to that of a few weeks back.

He added by saying that improved market conditions are the main reason for doing the same. According to reports the company is operating its ethylene capacities at roughly 90-95 percent compared to 80-85 percent a few weeks ago. Meanwhile ethylene prices have started climbing in the last few days and have risen by as much as 15 percent.

Pakistan:State of the art tanneries zone coming in Sialkot soon!

Pakistan:State of the art tanneries zone coming in Sialkot soon!

A high-tech tanneries zone in Sialkot is coming up very recently with an investment of Rs400 million. This zone will be developed over an area spanning 384 acres.

In this venture, Punjab Government will invest Rs300 million while remaining Rs100 million will be contributed by stakeholders.

Official sources from Pakistan tannery association informed Fibre2fashion.com, “After the completion of this project, all existing tanneries, those are scattered in and sorrounding Sialkot would be shifted in this new zone in order to work smoothly.”

An affluent water treatment plant would also be installed here. This will help to cope with the growing pollution threats caused by the ill-planned establishment of tanneries in and close to Sialkot.

Currently, nearly 248 tanneries of different sizes are operating in and close to Sialkot; of which nine large, 79 medium and 160 small tanneries are functioning in the area.

The main intention of setting up of this Sialkot Tanneries Zone is to ensure pollution-free surroundings to the inhabitants living in tanneries cluster as well as to the environment.

Vietnam:ISA Tan Tec to set up New Ecological Tannery with LITE

The Germany/Chinese high-quality leather manufacturer ISA Tan Tec is expanding despite the financial crisis. The company is investing USD 8.7 million in its new ecologically friendly tannery in Saigon, Vietnam. The new production facility will supply markets outside of China.

Thanks to its LITE concept for environmentally friendly leather production, ISA Tan Tec has a considerably smaller carbon footprint than traditional tanneries. "The demand for climate-friendly leather is greater than ever.

Last year, our sales increased by 16 percent in the footwear segment. With this investment, we're sending a clear signal — even during times of global economic downturn, it really pays to invest in sustainable technology that conserves resources," explained Thomas Schneider, founder and CEO of ISA Tan Tec.

"ISA's LITE leather is setting a new standard for the footwear industry. This tannery supports our efforts of producing environmentally better products with continuous monitoring and reduction in chemical, water and energy use."

"ISA is rethinking how energy and water are used in leather manufacturing. These efforts will change people's mindset about what can be achieved to overcome traditional supply chain performance and behavior," said Jeffrey Swartz, President and CEO, The Timberland Company.

In the new production facility, a total of 280 employees will produce two million square meters of high-quality leather each year. The topping-out ceremony will be celebrated in May of 2009.

ISA Tan Tec also pursues an ambitious environmental agenda at its existing tannery in Chinese Guangzhou — with great success. Within just 18 months, the company was able to reduce its heavy oil consumption by 28 percent and decrease the electricity used in retanning by a full 76 percent.

ISA Tan Tec needs only 33 megajoules of energy to produce one square meter of wet blue leather while the industry standard is 52 megajoules according to the British Leather Technology Centre. This success is founded on the company's LITE concept. Developed in-house, it stipulates continual monitoring of energy and water consumption.

France:Sustainable development theme of Expofil to be held from Feb 10

France:Sustainable development theme of Expofil to be held from Feb 10

Sustainable development, respect for the environment, ecology, recycling, those are some of the final consumer’s concerns that the textile chain has been gradually integrating and that can be found in the collections of the fibre producers and spinners exhibiting at the forthcoming Expofil that will be held from 10 to 13 February 2009 at Parc d’Expositions de Paris-Nord Villepinte.

However, performance is not left aside as shown in technological innovations applied in spinning as well as in treatments. Firmly anchored to the realities of market, Expofil has always favoured an approach that made it possible to give visitors a comprehensive, yet selective, offer that suits their needs precisely.

36 spinners and fibre producers from 15 countries have already registered for the next edition, among them 2 newcomers:

MITSUBISHI RAYON (Japan):
This important Japanese group produces, among other fibres, 120 000 tons of acrylic fibres annually, of which 90% are exported. It will present at Expofil a range of products with special properties: anti-pilling (Vonnel H6 Series), anti-static (Corebrid-B), super fine denier fibre (Miyabi) and Funcle, a flat cross-section fibre. Its main markets are knitting (flat-bed and circular), hosiery, hand-knitting yarns and technical uses.

DARE GLOBAL-SINODENIM (China):
This Company, specializing in dyeing and finishing, presents CPRD (Continuous Pigment Ring Dyeing), an environmentally friendly new pigment dyeing process that allows an energy saving of 40% and a 95% water reduction. Its annual production capacity is 3 000 tons of dyed yarns, in a wide range of colours and fibres (bamboo, linen, Modal, viscose, cotton, polyester, Spandex, Tencel, etc.). These yarns are aimed at apparel weaving and flat-bed knitting. We also see the return of the Italian spinner FILMAR, specialist of 100% long staple, mercerized, Egyptian cotton.

Designed this season by Dutch designer Mies Splinter, the Expofil forum is an inviting way for buyers to discover, as in a jewel case, the spinners and fibre producers’ products. The space is conceived as an unfolded house, curio cabinets, with unexpected openings, poetic passages, disconcerting see through. It builds up a precious and sophisticated showcase of artistic know-how for the preview of yarns and fibres for autumn-winter 2010/11.

This intimate space features interferences, with a winter season evolving between discretion, palpitations, precautions, perturbations and exaggerations. A space that unfurls and brings to broad daylight the updated products for spring summer 2010 as well as technological advances and fibre innovations.

The yarn/fabric cooperation continues in the Pulsation forum of hall 5, designed by Matali Crasset. In this area, a specific space is dedicated this season to environmentally or human-friendly products. Developments centered on technological advances, especially in finishing processes, will be displayed alongside the innovations of fibre producers, spinners and weavers.

India:Exquisite handicraft products draw vast crowds

India:Exquisite handicraft products draw vast crowds

A handicrafts expo titled `Indian Handicraft Expo' is being held at Kanpur, in Uttar Pradesh, drawing vast crowds to the exotic products on display at the fair. Artisans from across India are taking displaying their crafts.

On display are cloth paintings from Orissa, which are exported to different countries worldwide and cloth covers from the state of West Bengal to retain the freshness of the Indian roti, an alternative to the casserole used in urban Indian homes.

The enthusiastic visitors and lovers of handicrafts are put off by the exorbitant price of the products on display which is leading to low sales at the fair. The artisans however, are defending the prices due to the labour and material that goes in to making the products.

According to craftsmen from Orissa, who specialize in making the famous cloth paintings, the colours used are natural colours. For example, according to them white colour is got from crushing seas shells and black by burning soot inside coconut fibres.

USA:Worth suggests Michelle Obama wear Knot-Back Gala Dress for Inaugural

Caroline Davis, founder of The Worth Collection, the American fashion brand that empowers women to build their own businesses selling Worth while balancing family and community commitments, has suggested that Michelle Obama wear the luxury--but accessible--label's simple, sleek and sleeveless Cady Knot-Back Gala Dress to the January 20 Inaugural Ball. The gown, which features an exposed back closed with a row of vertebrae-skimming, double-knotted ties, is from the company's Winter 2008-09 Collection.

Caroline Davis made the suggestion in a January 12 email to Melissa Winters, Deputy Chief of Staff to the future First Lady.

"We love the Cady Knot-Back Gala Dress in either patriotic, candy-apple red or elegant black for Mrs. Obama," said Davis, a celebrated American entrepreneur who started her first company 30 years ago when her husband told her the vacuum cleaner she wanted was too expensive. "Mrs. Obama has a tall, beautiful figure, gorgeous arms and a strong back. This silhouette is perfect for her."

Davis hopes that Worth's story will appeal to Mrs. Obama as much as the gown does.

"I founded Worth 19 years ago when I saw that there was a need for flexible career options that provided women with income, an opportunity to be part of a participatory management structure and the ability to use their talents to build a successful business of their own," says Davis. "During these tough economic times, when the pressure on women to balance work, family and community is greater than ever, Worth would be a highly relevant choice for Mrs. Obama. In addition, it would make a strong, positive statement about Mrs. Obama's priorities as First Lady of the United States."

Made of viscose, acetate and Lycra, the Cady Knot-Back Gala Dress was designed by a female American designer, Diane Manley, and is sold by American women across the country.

The Worth Collection, Ltd., which designs and shows four collections of luxury ready-to-wear per year, is renowned for its sophisticated and elegant designs, classic lines, impeccable detailing, and fine fabrics.

UAE:Watches from HAUTLENCE with masculine & rugged looks

UAE:Watches from HAUTLENCE with masculine & rugged looks

UAE:Watches from HAUTLENCE with masculine & rugged looks

HAUTLENCE, one of the most coveted Swiss luxury watch brands, highlights its amazing evolution with the introduction of the HLS Collection. The new HLS01, HLS02 and HLS03 models are more masculine and rugged than the previous models but show originality in every detail. These models are interpretations of a strong and unique concept that takes watch making technology a step further.

The latest HLS timepieces have rubber straps and brushed steel which gives them a more contemporary look. The uniqueness in telling time using these instruments lies in the double device of a jumping hour coupled with a retrograde minute display which creates a three-dimensional timekeeping experience all within a distinctive case.

The small seconds hand is in a little dial at 5 o’clock while the intriguing rods, evocative of yesterday’s trains, drive the jumping hour. When the minute hand reaches 60 minutes, a device activated by a central spiral causes the end of the rod to arm a small spring with an inertia block that, in turn, drives the rotation of the hour disc. The HLS01, HLS02 and HLS03 models are produced in the limited edition of only 88 pieces and come in titanium, white gold and pink gold with alligator straps and rubber bands. The watches are water resistant to 50 metres and have sapphire crystals.

In tune with the HAUTLENCE philosophy, these timepieces are built around the caliber and follow the best Swiss watchmaking tradition keeping the overall design in the minimalist style. The exterior components then receive their punches and finishes, which make each case a totally unique product. Soft and aggressive, elegant and original, futuristic and provocative in its design, , the HLS01, HLS02 and HLS03 are syntheses of art and advanced technology, travelling along the boundary where beauty and strength merge.

These models represent an exclusive expression of superior technical, aesthetic and functional details. The result is an extraordinary and very personal object of desire which has a history of its own. Symbolic of the brand these watches are equipped with a manual winding regulator movement exclusively developed by HAUTLENCE. The basic movement starts with a Peseux 7001, a highly reliable manual wind caliber that exhibits good torque and vibrates at 3 Hertz, but only 30 per cent of this is retained.

Despite the searing modernism of HAUTLENCE watches, their traditional watchmaking values and quality remain integral to their overall performance. Major components including the balance are made by HAUTLENCE in collaboration with their technical partners. By artistically fusing the time telling indications and the watch’s regulating organ, each exclusive timepiece is transformed into a form of kinetic performance art, drawing you into its sphere of influence.

The HLS Collection is available at Damas Jewellery, Emirates Towers, Dubai; Al Sayegh Jewellery, Abu Dhabi and Al Majed Jewellery, Doha, Qatar. Further details can be obtained by calling HAUTLENCE Middle East office at 04-299 6500.

USA:POS systems from NCR Corp gets top honours from Aberdeen

Aberdeen Group, a global technology research and advisory firm, has named NCR Corporation as a “Champion,” a top designation from its Aberdeen AXIS Report for Retail Point of Sale (POS) Systems. The Aberdeen AXIS report, created as a global vendor assessment tool for retailers, rates POS retail solution providers primarily on Market Readiness and best Value Delivered to customers – two categories in which the report shows NCR leads the pack.

NCR retail clients include global leaders within the grocery, drug, foodservice, general merchandise and convenience store industries. NCR ’s POS software solutions are designed to help businesses transform the consumer experience, make check out easier and faster, and optimize operational efficiencies. Retailers can gain a true competitive advantage when deploying NCR POS software integrated with NCR ’s extensive retail automation portfolio, including self-checkout, self-service kiosks and workstations.

“The 2008 POS AXIS results have shown NCR has performed above par. Our data shows that NCR provides 50 percent higher value to its customers when compared to the norm. According to our data and qualitative interviews with NCR customers, the main advantage of NCR POS software is the ease of integration, flexibility and scalability when combined with NCR hardware,” said Sahir Anand, senior research analyst, Aberdeen .

Aberdeen developed the AXIS Report for Retail Point of Sale Systems to provide retail businesses with a competitive intelligence perspective on how various service and products providers are best positioned to help them achieve their goals.

The report assesses the success of the respective technology in the context of the user’s environment. The assessment is based on two key dimensions: first, Aberdeen aggregates Best-in-Class performance of companies in the target marketplace based on primary surveys conducted typically over the past twelve months; and second, Aberdeen conducts a vendor readiness assessment which includes evaluation of responses to a standardized vendor questionnaire, analyst briefings and customer interviews.

“NCR is very pleased that retailers rating POS systems placed NCR POS software atop the rankings in the Aberdeen AXIS report. The fact that customers, and analysts like Aberdeen , continue to recognize NCR POS software is a testament to the value that these solutions provide,” said Richard Arnold, NCR vice president, Retail Industry Marketing. “This Champion status validates our global leadership in helping retailers transform their businesses, move faster and operate with greater ease.”
