India:Export zone for handlooms to be set up near Erode

Very soon, a handloom export zone would be set up in Chennimalai, near Erode in Tamilnadu. This was revealed by the Director of Handlooms and Textiles, Ms R Jaya. She said that the state government had sanctioned the necessary funds for setting up the zone.

Erode is a textile town and is known and famous for its handloom products which includes towels and lungis. Products would be directly exported from the zone to various overseas destinations, added the Director.

Already, a huge quantity of handloom products are being exported from the region and this export zone would give a thrust to the existing volume and value of exports by the numerous weavers’ cooperatives in the region.

The Director also said that a training centre would also be set up to impart training to weavers, where they would be given training on the latest looms and designs.
