Coffee shops furnished with upholstered winged armchairs - a new kind of comfort is invading Germany’s system-catering outlets. The demand for textiles suitable for use as upholstery fabrics in system-catering outlets of restaurants and coffee shop chains, in coordinating designs, is high.

This year, the "Young Contract Creations Award: Upholstery" calls on young designers to design textile sofas and chairs for this special catering category. Due to its popularity with participants and the positive reaction to the inaugural presentation of this award for young designers at Heimtextil 2008, the "Young Contract Creations Award: Upholstery 2009" is being launched again by Heimtextil and its partners, fibre manufacturer Trevira and trade magazine PolsterFashion.

The design prize offers budding designers an opportunity to show off their creative developments to a wide audience. The "Young Contract Creations Award: Upholstery" benefits a trade audience from industry, interior design, architecture and purchasing in equal measure, offering an opportunity to gain inspiration from the prototypes at a special show conceived specifically for the purpose in Hall 4.1.

The challenge for up-and-coming designers lies in combining creativity with know-how and skill. In addition, the main focus is on the areas of application for the fabrics. Fabrics, which appeal strongly to the hotel and catering trade, must be able to withstand heavy use and comply with a host of safety standards. Participants will be provided with materials from polyester fibre manufacturer Trevira’s ultra-fire-resistant Trevira CS collections.

The "Young Contract Creations Award: Upholstery" is positioned as a promotional award and is aimed at students of interior design, product design and associated fields. The jury of representatives from the Heimtextil trade fair, publishers M. Ritthammer GmbH, the furniture industry and hotel and catering trade choose the best models from all the submissions. The Award, which carries prize money of € 5,000 and a practical period of training at a design-oriented company lasting several weeks will be presented at Heimtextil in January 2009.

The "Young Contract Creations Award: Upholstery" was premiered at Heimtextil 2008. Last January, the practical, innovative designs on the theme of textile furniture for public hotel areas, excited both the jury and the trade audience. The main award was won by a student from the Faculty for Design at the University of Coburg, Philipp Goreth, with his вЂPersonalita’ project.

The first of two commendations went to Robert Korn, from Hamburg’s University of Fine Arts for his вЂRoom maid’ design. Sebastian Herkner, a student at the University of Design in Offenbach, was awarded the second commendation for his вЂstrap’ footstool.
