Switzerland:Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels Exhibition

Sotheby’s spring sales of Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels at the Beau-Rivage Hotel in Geneva on Tuesday, 11 May 2010 will present a stunning selection of outstanding diamonds and coloured stones, glamorous signed pieces by the most prestigious houses and important jewels with noble provenance.

At the heart of the Magnificent Jewels sale will be an exquisite group of white and coloured diamonds, the centerpieces of which will be a magnificent emerald-cut white diamond weighing 52.82-carats and a highly important pear-shaped fancy vivid blue diamond weighing 5.02-carats, both of which are set as rings. The extremely rare white diamond has received a first class grading from the GIA, whose report states that the stone is Type IIa, is D-colour and has flawless clarity. Its polish and symmetry are also excellent and the privilege of naming the spectacular stone will be bestowed upon the new owner. Mounted as a ring, it is expected to fetch in excess of CHF7.3 million / $7 million. In the world of jewellery cognoscenti, 50-carats is a highly important benchmark in the weight of a diamond and any stone of this top grading that exceeds this figure enters a very exclusive level of rarity.

The spectacular 5.02-carat blue diamond is set in the form of a toi et moi ring, which is the design and creation of the celebrated French jeweller Alexandre Reza (illustrated right). The blue stone is mounted alongside an exceptional white diamond of the same shape and weighing 5.42-carats and the immensely chic and refined design is a perfect illustration of the excellence of Reza’s creations. Coming from a private collection, the elegant ring is estimated to fetch CHF4.25-7.4 million / $4-7 million and it is accompanied by two reports stating that the blue diamond is of fancy vivid blue and that the white diamond is of D-colour and internally flawless clarity.

Continuing Sotheby’s hugely successful track record of offering jewels with noble provenance, a fourth dedicated sale of Noble Jewels will be held in Geneva this May as part of the Magnificent Jewels auction series. This sale will be spearheaded by a highly important and beautiful diamond necklace by Chiappe, designed as a graduated riviГЁre of 28 circular-cut diamonds, with a total weight in excess of 160-carats. Further highlights of the sale will be jewels from the collections of Lily Marinho and the Italian opera star, Antonietta Stella.
